UKCA Update - James Molloy

Dear UK Cubing Community,

A year ago we informed you of a serious incident related to James Molloy’s misappropriation of UKCA funds. This statement serves as an update to this.

A legal agreement for the repayment of £56,281.32 has been reached between the UK Cube Association unincorporated association (UKCA UA) and Molloy. This sum was associated with Molloy's misappropriation of funds from the UKCA UA over a multi-year period, beginning in 2018, with the majority in the first half of 2023. UKCA UA members had become suspicious following unexpected cash flow challenges, and this led to an admission by Molloy of his misappropriation. The UKCA UA continues to evaluate its legal options with regard to this matter.

We have been made aware that the World Cube Association (WCA) has recently concluded its investigation process into Molloy’s actions and codified his removal from all WCA Staff positions and permanent ban from all WCA competitions.

The UK Cube Association Community Interest Company (UKCA CIC), a separate entity to the UKCA UA, was formed in June 2023. The UKCA CIC has taken on the financial operations of organising cubing competitions within the UK and is a recognised WCA Regional Organisation. The UKCA CIC is in a financially stable position to continue to support the UK Cubing Community, and will release a financial transparency statement to the UK Cubing Community in conjunction with our first year accounts submission to Companies House.

The UKCA CIC has financial controls in place to address prior gaps, specifically:

  • Provision of bank account access and documentation to multiple individuals, avoiding a single person having full control over the ability to make payments and all transaction information;

  • Documentation and review requirements for all reimbursement of expenses incurred by all volunteers, to avoid them from being falsified; and,

  • A professional accountant contracted to provide services to the UKCA CIC.

Following the repayment of all monies owed by Molloy to the UKCA UA, the intention of the members of the UKCA UA is to wind-up the unincorporated association. Following the payments of all outstanding financial obligations of the UKCA UA, the members intend to provide any surplus funds to the UKCA CIC to enable it to continue to support its objectives.

We are aware that this further statement comes nearly a year following the initial statement - we thank the UK Cubing Community for their patience. We were waiting for the WCA’s investigation process to conclude and, more generally, to ensure the UKCA was in a stable position. We will not be answering further questions or providing additional details at this stage.
